Why is this Pride Season different?

Every year, during the month of June, queer people all across the world bust out their rainbow flags, march down the streets and celebrate the differences that make us unique. From the outside looking in, it may seem like a month of pure partying and celebration but there’s a lot of politics and divineness within the idea of “pride”. Every year there are conversations about “pink-washing” (corporations profiting of queerness without actually supporting the community) and the role of police in parades, to name a few. Generally speaking, this boils down to the difference in opinions about the role of a ‘pride parade’, either as being a celebration or a protest. Personally, I think it is and should be a bit of both – after all, loving the part of you other deem lesser is the biggest act of rebellion - but I digress. Pride celebrations are rooted in a deep history of queerness, something that does, unfortunately, get overshadowed by the funner part. So, FYI there’s a federal election later this year! In just six months, Canadians will be heading to the polls to elect our next prime minister. I don’t blame you if this wasn’t on your radar, Canadian politics are certainly not as theatrical as our neighbour to the south.
